Piknik are one of the most distinctive and enduring bands in Russian rock — a dark, theatrical art-rock institution led since the early days by frontman, songwriter and guitarist Edmund Shklyarsky. Formed in Leningrad in 1978, the group built a world entirely their own: brooding minor-key riffs, hypnotic rhythms and melodies coloured with Eastern, almost oriental scales, all delivered in Shklyarsky's deep, mysterious baritone, which half-sings and half-declaims like an incantation. Their songs — among them 'Ieroglif', 'Egiptyanin', 'Shar tsveta khaki' and 'Korolevstvo krivykh' — trade in mysticism, ancient imagery, masks and shadow, feeling less like ordinary rock tracks than fragments of some strange ritual theatre. That theatricality extends to their famous live shows, staged with elaborate costumes, lighting and unusual custom-built instruments. While countless Soviet and Russian rock acts came and went, Piknik held to a singular gothic, symbolist vision for over four decades. For dramatic, cinematic, mystical rock with a hypnotic baritone at its centre, they remain unmatched.
