🎼 Syllables & melody

Type your lyrics — the syllable count appears next to every line. Sketch a tune with the mouse, listen to it, then press Fit: the melody reshapes itself to the words and keeps its contour. Everything runs in your browser; your text never leaves it.

    Why syllable counts matter

A melodic phrase has a fixed number of beats, and each one carries a syllable. More syllables than notes and you have to swallow the surplus; fewer and you stretch a vowel or leave a gap the tune never had. That is where the feeling of a song stumbling comes from, even when both the words and the melody are fine on their own.

How many syllables should a line have

There is no universal number, but lines within one verse should be comparable. Four lines of 8–9 syllables sing evenly; a 12-syllable line next to a 5-syllable one almost always sounds wrong. Anything past 15 syllables rarely fits a four-bar phrase. If you are writing for a generative model the mismatch is louder still: the model cannot compress the surplus, so it invents words instead.

    Fitting words and melody

Either edit the text on the flagged line, or press Fit and let the melody adapt: surplus notes merge — shortest pairs and repeated pitches first — and long notes split where syllables are missing. Pitches are preserved, so the tune stays recognisable; only the rhythmic subdivision changes.

    FAQ

    How are syllables counted?

By vowels, with a different rule per script. In Russian every vowel letter is a syllable, adjacent ones included. In Latin script a run of vowels collapses into one and a silent trailing e is dropped, so English is a good approximation rather than an exact count.

    Is it free?

Yes, completely, with no sign-up. Neither the counter nor the melody editor uses our servers — it all runs in your browser.

    Do you store my lyrics?

No. Nothing is sent to the server; downloading saves a file straight to your device.

    What does Fit do?

It reshapes the vocal line so the note count matches the syllable count — merging surplus notes and splitting long ones. Pitches are untouched, so the tune stays recognisable.

Can I load my own melody?

Yes. Open the ABC score panel under the editor, paste your notation and press Load. The current melody lives there too, ready to copy out.

Why does the sound lag behind the highlight?

That is your audio output latency — small on wired headphones, up to half a second on wireless. Drag the offset slider until the lit note matches what you hear; the value is remembered.
