Ricchi e Poveri are Italian pop at its sunniest — a group whose bright, blended harmonies and irresistible melodies made them festival favourites across Europe and beloved far beyond it. Formed in Genoa in 1968, they spent a decade as a quartet honing a warm, sentimental sound before hitting their commercial peak in the early 1980s as a trio with a string of exuberant, danceable hits. Their signature is the group vocal: male and female voices woven tightly together, trading unison hooks with a carefree Italian lilt over buoyant arrangements of chiming keyboards, punchy programmed rhythm and lush strings. Regulars at the Sanremo festival, they built choruses a stadium can sing back on first hearing. 'Sarà perché ti amo' became a Mediterranean summer standard, its melody familiar even to people who have never spoken a word of Italian, while 'Mamma Maria' turned into an unstoppable chant. Behind the froth is real craft — clean, radio-perfect production and vocal blends few groups ever matched. In the former Soviet republics especially, their music became a lasting emblem of carefree 80s optimism, played at every celebration.
