Russian blues rarely sounds as lived-in as it does here. Chizh & Co formed around Sergei Chigrakov, a Dzerzhinsk native who found his voice in the Saint Petersburg scene of the mid-1990s and turned twelve-bar shuffles into something warm and unmistakably homegrown. His raspy tenor carries the honesty of the bard tradition, yet the band swings on lazy boogie grooves, harmonica wails and bluesy guitar bends that would feel right at home in a smoky club. The self-titled debut in 1994, followed by Chizh & Co in 1995 and Perekryostok in 1996, mapped a world of open roads, tangled love and stubborn freedom. Anthems like Vechnaya Molodost and Fantom became campfire staples, while O Lyubvi, Assol, Polonez and the wry Khochu Chaya show a songwriter who moves easily between electric swagger and quiet acoustic confession. There is grit in the tone, tenderness in the lyrics, and a conversational looseness that makes every chorus feel like it was worked out among friends. This descriptor summons that exact atmosphere: analog warmth, unhurried tempos, fingerpicked ballads and boogie strut, built for anyone chasing the dusty romance of nineties Russian rock and honest, road-worn storytelling.
